IIT – Intercultural Institute from Timisoara

Intercultural Institute from TimisoaraIntercultural Institute from Timisoara (IIT) is a non-governmental organisation, autonomous and without financial profit, with cultural, civic and scientific activity, without political goals, that accepts and promotes the values and principles of the Council of Europe in the intercultural dimension.

IIT was established in 1992, with the support of local authorities from Timisoara and the Council of Europe. IIT pursues the development of the intercultural dimension in the field of education and culture while promoting at the national and international level the climate of tolerance and dialogue specific to the town of Timisoara. IIT has established a wide network of partners from all over the world, including institutions, NGOs and professionals from its areas of interest, such as education, culture, youth, minorities and migration.

Starting with 1992, the Intercultural Institute from Timisoara has:

  • implemented, at local, regional, national and international level, as main coordinator or as a partner, more than 50 pilot projects, mainly related with intercultural education, with the financial support of the Council of Europe, the European Commission (Socrates, Leonardo, Phare, IPA CBC, Erasmus), and also other institutions from Europe and U.S.A.
  • published, as a result of different projects, more than 30 volumes, in Romanian, French, English, Spanish, Slovak, and Hungarian; there were also translated into Romanian Council of Europe publications such as: The case for intercultural education by Antonio Perotti, All different, all equal – educational package and COMPASS – A manual for human rights education for young people (the last two of them being published by the Youth Department of the Council of Europe).

Intercultural Institute from Timisoara and its partners have initiated and developed projects in order to integrate the migrants from non-EU states in Romania. IIT efforts have been oriented on two main directions:

  1. To develop consultation mechanisms for the foreigner communities, public authorities and civil society from Romania;
  2. To develop the framework for organization of Romanian language and cultural orientation courses for adults and children from non-EU member states with a residency in Romania.
